Our gratitude go to all who responded to the urgent new challenges facing girls in Western Kenya. Our appeal over the summer raised $1,800 for our partners Acacia in Kenya (AIK)

ICUUW partnered with AIK to respond to urgent challenges facing women and girls in western Kenya, including creating awareness of COVID-19, distributing sanitary towels and equipment (water buckets, soap, masks) to prevent and manage the coronavirus, and educating girls about preventing teenage pregnancies and early marriages. The aid also assisted 45 displaced families by floods in coping with the recovery process.

AIK will use the funds to strengthen its COVID prevention program and build the resilience of girls during this global health crisis.  Care packages are being distributed and specific needs are addressed on a case-by-case basis. Families will be reminded that AIK is there to support them and is prepared to continue the sponsorship of girls when schools reopen. Parental education and community mobilization will forge a more supportive environment for girls and families, strengthening efforts to prevent child marriages.

Sam Lutomia, co-founder of AIK, sends greetings to ICUUW, its members, and supporters: "I hope all is well with you and everyone at ICUUW who participated in the fundraiser. We really appreciate your contributions that will go towards the COVID-19 prevention program for the girls and community at St. Elizabeth Lureko girls school in Mumias. Once again thanks to the ICUUW team for the much needed support."
