Frequently Asked Questions and Answers
When was ICUUW founded?
ICUUW was founded after the first convocation in February 2009 when 600 U*U women came together in Houston, TX to talk in small, facilitated groups in order to build a shared understanding of issues impacting their lives, prioritize the issues identified, and set up action plans to address them.
Since when is ICUUW in consultative status with Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) at the UN?
ICUUW received consultative status from the UN in 2019. We have been actively involved at the UN at least since then. Consultative status provides NGOs like us with access to not only ECOSOC, but also to its many subsidiary bodies, to the various human rights mechanisms of the United Nations, ad-hoc processes on small arms, as well as special events organized by the President of the General Assembly. We are very involved with the annual Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), the High-level Political Forum (HLPF) and other efforts.
Where do ICUUW members live?
You will find ICUUW members wherever you find U*Us in the world. And that’s where our members engage to improve the lives of all women and girls. You do not have to be a woman to become an ICUUW member. You don’t have to be a U*U either. We do expect you to share our values, principles and goals.
What’s the mission of ICUUW? What are it’s goals? How does ICUUW work?
Mission
We are a global partnership of Unitarian Universalists who work for all women’s and girls’ equity through Unitarian Universalist connections around the world.
Goals
We connect women to advance women’s leadership and self-determination. We work together to end all forms of discrimination by working for a world in which women
- Can pursue their dreams and goals, free from physical or psychological violence, including in the digital space
- Are leaders and participate in all aspects of their societies, including, but not limited to, faith, civil, and business organizations, and in environmental decision-making and peace building at all levels
- Have equal access to economic opportunities
- Have equal access to education
- Have access to affordable, comprehensive, and quality health care, including reproductive care
Guiding Principles
In everything we do, we
- promote U*U values of affirming the inherent worth of all individuals and by working for justice and fostering global community
- respect the capabilities and contributions of all women everywhere in every way
- include all women, regardless of religion, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, ability, class, ethnicity, or age
As a global organization we are aware of the intricacies of intercultural dialogue. Our members are a diverse group and how we work together is as important to us as what we do. Learning how to be better in global community - how to be in right relations - is an ongoing process. Every member contributes to this global dialogue, and every voice is equally important.
